Rochester football club history

Rochester Football Club was formed in 1874. The club started with the formation of a committee at Tidy’s Rest Down Hotel in Rochester. They played their first match in club history against Chuck.
However, in the early days of the club’s formation, Rochester did not get the opportunity to play in any major tournament. However, they were able to play regularly with local clubs.

In 1891, Rochester got the opportunity to play in a tournament called the Northern District Football Association. In 1892, Rochester won the Aitken Football Premiership Trophy by finishing top of the points table, but were disqualified for playing a player at Rochester without permission after Echuca protested. The tournament authorities then decided to arrange a grand final match between Rochester and Echuca, but Rochester refused to participate in the final, resulting in Echuca being awarded the premiership title.

In 1904, two more football clubs were formed in Rochester – Rochester Imperials and Rochester Federal FC. In 1905, both Rochester Imperial and Rochester Federal merged to form a senior team and entered the Campaspe District Football Association. In 1910, two more clubs, Ramblers and Rovers, were formed in the Rochester Football Association and Rovers won the Premiership title.

In 1911, Rochester played in the Bendigo Football League in a match at Queen Elizabeth Oval, where Bendigo defeated Rochester.

When the First World War broke out in 1915 more than 20 Rochester players joined the war and some never came home. William Campbell, Cyril Downe, William Edwards, Victor Lamb, Norman Ray, Vincent and Donald MacInnes, Sam Sherlock, Patrick Morrissey all died in the First World War.

In 1915 when the Goulburn Valley Football League went into recess during the war, Rochester joined the Bendigo Football League.

In 1920, Bamaun defeated Rochester Imperials to win the Rochester & District Football Association.

In 1922, challenged Rochester to a grand final, which Rochester won.

After four years in the Rochester District Football Association, Bamawan, Nannella, Rochester’s two teams, Imperials and Rovers, merged and Rochester FC returned to the BFL in 1923. In 1924, Rochester’s James Doyle was second in the goal kicking tally with 61 goals.

In 1923 Rochester won the minor premiership at Bendigo FL.

Then from 1933 to 1935, Rochester Rovers FC played in the Echuca District Football League.

Rochester football stadium

The Rochester Community Sports Complex Stadium is used by Rochester FC as their home ground. It is also called the “downtown soccer stadium”. It is the home of the Flower City Union of the National Premier Soccer League. Prior to Rochester FC, the stadium was home to the Rochester Lancers and Lady Lancers of the NPSL and UWS in 2018 respectively. The stadium originally hosted the Rochester Rhinos of the USL, the Rochester Rattlers of the MLL, and the Western New York Flashes of the NWSL.

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association also hosts other sporting events such as Rochester Rhinos elite youth football games and practices, American football, field hockey and drum and bugle corps competitions as well as concerts as well as occasional events. The Division V Football Championship and the Far West Regional Championship were held. It is owned and operated by the City of Rochester as a youth sports complex.
