The Charlotte Independence was first established in 2014. USL buys the football club from Pro Franchise Shirt Eagles. The name “Independence” was chosen from the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence.

In 2015, the Independence lost their first game to the Charleston Battery at Transamerica Field, 3–2. Jack Thompson scored the first goal in the history of Charlotte Independence in the 13th minute.
